Introduction
Aquatic activity and swimming offer significant health benefits, and clinicians increasingly recognise them as cost-effective healthcare interventions. For example, water-based exercise supports patients with musculoskeletal conditions as well as those managing chronic disease. However, despite this strong evidence base, clinicians still underuse these options in routine practice and social prescribing pathways.
Healthcare professionals, social prescribers, and students are well positioned to recommend aquatic activity. Nevertheless, many lack the foundational knowledge and confidence to signpost or discuss it effectively. Therefore, understanding when and how to integrate water-based exercise into care plans can meaningfully improve patient outcomes. At the same time, it strengthens both preventative and rehabilitative health strategies.
The Aquatic Activity and Swimming for Health programme addresses this gap directly. It equips professionals with clear evidence and practical guidance. As a result, they can confidently promote, prescribe, and engage with aquatic activity as both a therapeutic and preventative health intervention.
