Introduction
Prescribing errors remain one of the most common and preventable causes of patient harm worldwide. Indeed, they occur across healthcare settings and affect patients at every level of care. For doctors in the early stages of their careers, developing a safe and reliable approach to prescribing is therefore essential. It is not only a professional requirement but also a core patient safety responsibility.
Moreover, the consequences of prescribing errors can be serious. They range from adverse drug reactions to significant clinical incidents. Consequently, these risks highlight the need for structured and curriculum-aligned training in safe prescribing.
Foundation doctors are among the most frequent prescribers in hospital settings. However, they are also at a stage where prescribing confidence and competence are still developing. For this reason, understanding where errors commonly occur, and how to prevent them, becomes a critical component of Foundation-level medical training.
To address this need, the Safe Prescribing elearning programme supports doctors during this developmental phase. In particular, it provides essential knowledge and practical guidance to help them write safe and accurate prescriptions. Furthermore, the content aligns closely with the core curriculum for principles of safe prescribing.
Developed by: This programme was developed by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges in partnership with NHS England’s elearning for healthcare, ensuring the content is aligned with UK Foundation training standards and reflects current best practice in safe prescribing.
