Avoiding Term Admissions into Neonatal units – For Nurses, Midwives and other healthcare professionals

Avoiding Term Admissions into Neonatal Units refers to a set of strategies and practices aimed at reducing the number of full-term newborns who require admission to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Traditionally, healthcare providers have primarily reserved NICUs for preterm infants or those with medical conditions that require specialized care. However, in recent years, preventable causes such as elective inductions or cesarean deliveries before 39 weeks gestation have caused an increase in the number of full-term infants being admitted to NICUs.

To achieve the goal of avoiding term admissions into neonatal units, healthcare providers need to implement strategies such as promoting full-term pregnancy and childbirth, educating parents and healthcare providers about the risks of elective inductions or cesarean deliveries before 39 weeks, and implementing protocols to ensure that such procedures are performed only when medically necessary. The primary objective of these strategies is to enhance health outcomes for newborns while also reducing healthcare costs.

The aim of this online medical course is to assist midwives and other healthcare professionals in improving outcomes for babies, mothers and families by promoting safer deliveries. The course specifically explores methods to reduce avoidable issues that can result in the admission of infants born at term to neonatal units. Additionally, there is a session that focuses on raising awareness of the significance of keeping mother and baby together.

Content

The online medical course comprises of units focused on four key clinical areas:

  • Respiratory conditions
  • Hypoglycaemia
  • Jaundice
  • Asphyxia (perinatal hypoxia–ischaemia)

The ATAIN programme also identified the impact of mother baby separation and so a specific session has been included to raise awareness of the importance of keeping mother and baby together.
