Cultural competence in healthcare refers to a healthcare provider’s ability to understand and effectively respond to the cultural and linguistic needs of patients from diverse backgrounds.
It includes a willingness to learn about and respect different cultural backgrounds, effective communication with patients and their families. In healthcare it aims to reduce health disparities. It helps improve the overall quality of care provided to all patients; regardless of their cultural or linguistic background.
Having a greater awareness of a wide range of cultural beliefs can help healthcare professionals to meet the differing needs of patients and their families.
