This e-learning resource supports doctors on the Foundation programme – which forms the bridge between medical school and specialist/general practice training. It has been developed by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, the UK Foundation Programme Office and Health Education England.

Foundation programme - An Online Resource for Foundation doctors

The clinical content of the Foundation Programme covers the full UK Foundation training curriculum, with high-quality images, video clips and animations. Scenario-based exercises enable you to enhance your diagnostic and management skills and examine various clinical data.

Course Content

The Foundation e-Learning Programme includes more than 140 sessions, which are mapped to specific professional capabilities within the Foundation curriculum.: The sections are arranged by professional capability, as follows::

Section 1: Professional behaviour and trust

Professional Capability:
  1. Acts professionally
  2. Delivers patient centred care and maintains trust
  3. Behaves in accordance with ethical and legal requirements
  4. Keeps practice up to date through learning and teaching

Section 2: Communication, team-working and leadership

Professional Capability:
  1. Communicates clearly in a variety of settings
  2. Works effectively as a team member

Section 3: Clinical care

Professional Capability:
  1. Recognises, assesses and initiates management of the acutely ill patient
  2. Recognises, Assesses and manages patients with long term conditions
  3. Obtains history, performs clinical examination, formulates differential diagnosis and management plan
  4. Requests relevant investigations and acts upon results
  5. Prescribes safely
  6. Is trained and manages cardiac and respiratory arrest
  7. Demonstrates understanding of the principles of health promotion and illness prevention
  8. Manages palliative and end of life care

Section 4: Safety and quality

Professional Capability:
  1. Recognises and works within limits of personal competence
  2. Makes patient safety a priority in clinical practice
  3. Contributes to quality improvement
