Information Governance Training Introduction

The appropriate management and sharing of information is a core responsibility for everyone in health and social care. Staff routinely collect, process and share sensitive personal data across organisations and systems. Therefore, poor information governance can lead to serious consequences. Data breaches and legal non-compliance can harm patients, service users, and organisations alike.

Health and care professionals must understand the legal frameworks and ethical principles that govern information use. Moreover, they need clarity about their practical responsibilities in daily work. This obligation is not optional; it forms a central part of professional practice. Whether managing information assets, responding to subject access requests, or sharing confidential data, staff require reliable guidance. As a result, they can act confidently and in line with current standards.

To support this need, the Information Governance Training online course delivers structured and practical knowledge. Specifically, it equips professionals to manage and share information in a legally compliant, ethical, and secure way. The course applies to both frontline healthcare and adult social care settings.

Developed by: This course was developed by NHS England’s Health and Care Information Governance Panel and NHS England’s elearning team, ensuring the content reflects current legal requirements and the real-world information governance responsibilities of health and care staff.

This information governance programme comprises multiple sessions covering essential data protection and information management responsibilities for health and social care professionals. Topics include the role of Information Asset Owners, handling subject access requests, and information sharing protocols tailored to healthcare and social care contexts.

Sessions:

Becoming an information asset owner This session provides new Information Asset Owners (IAOs) with practical guidance on getting started in the role. It examines information assets and associated risks, the importance of proper management of information assets and registers, IAO responsibilities, and how the IAO role relates to other information asset positions.

Managing subject access requests Designed for staff who manage or contribute information to subject access requests (SARs), this session clarifies what constitutes a SAR and outlines individuals’ legal rights. It presents a systematic process for handling standard SARs and explores special scenarios involving SAR management.

Information sharing These sessions are intended for frontline health and social care staff who need to share confidential information as part of their daily responsibilities. Each session takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes and aims to build confidence in using and sharing information for care and other purposes. Staff only need to complete one of the two information sharing sessions.

Information sharing for frontline staff working in health care Targeted at frontline and administrative healthcare staff responsible for sharing confidential information, this session builds understanding of information sharing principles and their practical application. Through diverse healthcare scenarios featuring GPs, nurses, midwives, practice managers, administrative staff, and other professionals, learners explore when and how to share information, with explanations of correct actions and their underlying rationale.

Information sharing for staff working in adult social care Designed for all staff in social care settings, this session develops understanding of information sharing principles and their application in practice. Learners will gain clarity on when and how to share information through practical social care scenarios featuring social workers, registered care managers, occupational therapists, and other care professionals. The session teaches when it’s appropriate to share information, when to seek permission before sharing, and whom to consult.
