Introduction
Neonatal care takes place in emotionally complex environments. Babies, families, and healthcare staff all face significant psychological challenges. Supporting family mental health during this traumatic period is essential for improving long-term outcomes. However, psychosocial needs are often under-addressed in neonatal settings.
Equally important is the wellbeing of staff. The emotional demands of neonatal work can lead to stress and burnout without appropriate support. Therefore, psychological care must include the workforce as well as families.
Psychologically-informed care offers a structured framework for neonatal units. It helps families manage the stress of intensive care admission. In addition, it supports staff in navigating the emotional impact of their roles. This approach recognises that psychological wellbeing directly influences clinical outcomes. Moreover, care should extend beyond discharge to promote long-term family resilience.
The Psychologically-Informed Neonatal Care course introduces the entire neonatal workforce to these principles. It equips professionals with practical skills to improve outcomes for babies, families, and themselves.
