Safeguarding Children

The Safeguarding Children elearning course covers a broad range of issues such as the roles and responsibilities of staff, multi-agency working, what to do if a child discloses abuse, unexplained injuries, disability and neglect. This package also includes Health Education England’s Safeguarding Adults programme as an added bonus. This resource supports all health and social care staff in protecting vulnerable adults from abusive environments.

Content

The course is organised into three different levels, according to competences and professional role. Level 1 is for non-clinical staff; Level 2 is for all clinical staff and Level 3 is for clinical staff working with children, young people and/or their parents/carers.

Level 1: Suitable for all healthcare and non-clinical staff

This module covers a range of topics, including:

  • an overview of child protection (and the categories)
  • legal requirements and implications
  • the roles and responsibilities of staff
  • how to respond to concerns about safeguarding issues
  • the importance of multi-agency working
  • effective communication
  • the importance of defensive documentation

Level 2: Aimed at staff who have regular clinical content with children

This module is aimed at staff who either have regular clinical contact with children or who deal with adults who may pose a risk to children. It is suited to both healthcare professionals (including dentists, nurses, audiologists and pharmacists) and those working in social care or occupational health. The sessions look at how to manage concerns that a child is being or may be maltreated.

Topics covered include:

  • legislation and recommendations
  • categories of abuse and case studies
  • the roles and responsibilities of staff
  • what to do if a child discloses abuse
  • the importance of multi-agency working
  • effective communication
  • the importance of defensive documentation

Additional bespoke case studies relevant to primary care, acute care and paediatrics are also available.

Level 3: Designed for GPs, consultants and paediatricians

Seven sessions cover a range of topics, such as:

  • unexpected deaths
  • antenatal risk factors
  • unexplained injuries
  • disability
  • neglect
  • fabricated and induced illnesses
  • adolescents presenting with intoxication
