Sepsis in Acute Care Settings Introduction
Sepsis is one of the most time-critical conditions in acute healthcare. It is also one of the most dangerous to miss. Sepsis occurs when the body’s response to infection triggers widespread inflammation and organ dysfunction. Without prompt treatment, it can progress rapidly to septic shock and death. Importantly, research shows that each hour of delay increases mortality risk. Therefore, early recognition is a patient safety imperative.
Healthcare professionals in acute care must identify sepsis quickly and accurately. However, sepsis does not always present clearly. Its symptoms often overlap with other conditions. As a result, clinicians need vigilance, a structured assessment approach, and familiarity with current treatment guidelines. In addition, high-risk groups require particular attention. This includes people with a learning disability, who may present differently or face barriers to timely recognition.
To address these challenges, the Sepsis in Acute Care Settings elearning course builds essential knowledge and clinical awareness. Specifically, it uses real-world case studies to demonstrate varied presentations and evidence-based management strategies aligned with current NICE guidance.
Developed by: This course was developed by NHS England, with content aligned to the most recent update to National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance on sepsis recognition and management, ensuring it reflects current clinical standards for acute care settings.

This sepsis training programme uses an overview session followed by four case-based scenarios to develop clinical understanding of sepsis recognition and management across diverse patient populations. The course explores how different patient characteristics—including good health, learning disabilities, frailty, and multimorbidity—affect symptom presentation, diagnosis, and treatment approaches, concluding with a summary and resource guide.
Sessions:
Overview This session explores how sepsis develops, the characteristic signs and symptoms, the underlying mechanisms, and which populations are at elevated risk.
Case 1: A patient in good health This session features a case study of a generally healthy patient, providing real-world learning opportunities.
Case 2: A patient with a learning disability This session examines a case study involving a patient with a learning disability, exploring how this may influence symptom presentation and interpretation, alongside treatment protocols.
Case 3: A patient with frailty This session presents a case study of a frail patient, addressing the additional presentations and risk factors that may be present and require consideration, alongside treatment guidelines.
Case 4: A patient with multimorbidity This session investigates the complexities of a patient with multiple comorbidities and how this impacts both diagnosis and treatment decisions.
Summary and resources This session reviews the key learning points from the programme and identifies sources for further reading and continuing education.
